Train to earn and become a fully qualified Smart Meter Engineer, with the extra security of knowing that you will have a guaranteed and permanent job with a national metering company after only 6 weeks.

SMS PLC is the national metering company who you will be employed with. Employment commences from week 7 of the training course and continues thereafter with an additional pay increase too.

These courses are fully self-funded at a cost of £7,440 (including VAT) and full details of the training centre, training course and application process is enclosed below.

ECTA is the training centre in Stockport, where the Classroom Training takes place (first 6 weeks only).

We understand that it's a huge commitment for individuals to take the plunge into a new career, especially in an industry that requires skills and qualifications, so we'll be with you every step of the way through your training journey.

Furthermore, nobody wants to invest both time and money into training without the reassurance that there is a job waiting for them, at the end (or even better, midway through the course!)

That's why ECTA have teamed up with SMS PLC to GUARANTEE you employment from week 7 of your training.

Guaranteed Employment

You be embarking on a new career to be a fully qualified Dual Fuel SMART Meter Installer with guaranteed employment after 6 weeks on a starting salary of

£28,000

1st Pay Increase: Following completion of the course and qualifications your basic salary will increase to

£31,637 plus Peugeot Expert Van and Fuel Card, Phone, Uniform, Tools, PPE are provided too!

Plus additional Bonus and Overtime so your first year earnings will be over £40,000

The Training

You will be trained in both Gas and Electric SMART Metering.

You will have a mixture of classroom learning, workshop work and onsite mentoring throughout the 13 weeks.

First 6 weeks are Classroom based at ECTA Training just outside Stockport, near Manchester.

Second 6 weeks is when you will complete your Portfolio, fitting meters in Customer's homes under the supervision and direction of a fully qualified Smart Meter Installer. This mentoring will take place as local as possible to where you live.

During the final week, which is back in Stockport, to do your final examinations to gain the following:

The Qualifications

Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering (gas & electric).

EUSR Card (Energy and Utility Skills Register)

You will also gain a MOCOPA (electric metering competence)

Gas Safe Registered.

Pre-requisites

Successful Candidates will need to have the following:

Passion about becoming a fully qualified SMART Meter Installer

Excellent interpersonal skills, as you will be facing customers on a daily basis.

Clean Criminal Record

Full Manual Drivers Licence with no more than 6 points

Be in good physical health for accessing cupboards or climbing step ladders.

The full course fee of £7,440 has to be paid in full prior to a course commencing;

Please submit your CV in the first instance

Applicants will receive an initial pre-qualifying email by return from ECTA.

Then full details will be sent you via email along with an Application Form

Interviews and pre-assessment

You can attend an open-day at ECTA Training in Stockport to undergo the testing, assessment and interview stage of the application process. This takes place on a Thursday at 10am or 2pm and will also include an interview with SMS PLC (the employer) too.

Note: Finance Applications have to take place in the centre too.

If travel to Stockport is not possible, then we will complete the interview with me via a video link and testing will be carried out this way too. A meter telephone interview may also be required with SMS PLC.

Testing will include a Maths and English Test and a Colour Vision Test too.

Other useful information

Course start dates are 23rd August and 4th October (10 trainees per course).

Accommodation for the first 6 weeks is at your own expense, although the training centre has a list of various local options to suit all budgets. This is only required for the Classroom because field mentoring will be as close as possible to where you live.

Over 500 trainees have attended and completed this course during the past 5 years. The course is designed for New Entrants with no previous experience of working within the metering or engineering industry.
